The Adwords Problem with Strict Capacity Constraints

چکیده
We study an online assignment problem where the offline servers have capacities, and the objective is to obtain a maximum-weight assignment of requests that arrive online. The weight of edges incident to any server can be at most the server capacity. Our problem is related to the adwords problem, where the assignment to a server is allowed to exceed its capacity. In many applications, however, server capacities are strict and partially-served requests are of no use, motivating the problem we study. While no deterministic algorithm can be competitive in general for this problem, we give an algorithm with competitive ratio that depends on the ratio of maximum weight of any edge to the capacity of the server it is incident to. If this ratio is 1/2, our algorithm is tight. Further, we give a randomized algorithm that is 6-competitive in expectation for the general problem. Most previous work on the problem and its variants assumes that the edge weights are much smaller than server capacities. Our guarantee, in contrast, does not require any assumptions about job weights. We also give improved lower bounds for both deterministic and randomized algorithms. For the special case of parallel servers, we show that a load-balancing algorithm is tight and near-optimal. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.2 Online Computation

Online Budgeted Repeated Matching
A basic combinatorial online resource allocation problem is considered, where multiple servers have individual capacity constraints, and at each time slot, a set of jobs arrives, that have potentially different weights to different servers. At each time slot, a one-to-one matching has to be found between jobs and servers, subject to individual capacity constraints, in an online manner. The obje...
متن کاملHub Covering Location Problem Considering Queuing and Capacity Constraints
In this paper, a hub covering location problem is considered. Hubs, which are the most congested part of a network, are modeled as M/M/C queuing system and located in placeswhere the entrance flows are more than a predetermined value.A fuzzy constraint is considered in order to limit the transportation time between all origin-destination pairs in the network. On modeling, a nonlinear mathematica...
متن کاملA hybrid ant colony optimization algorithm to optimize capacitated lot-sizing problem
The economical determination of lot size with capacity constraints is a frequently complex, problem in the real world. In this paper, a multi-level problem of lotsizing with capacity constraints in a finite planning horizon is investigated. A combination of ant colony algorithm and a heuristic method called shifting technique is proposed for solving the problem. The parameters, including the co...
متن کاملOptimal Trajectory of Flexible Manipulator with Maximum Load Carrying Capacity
In this paper, a new formulation along with numerical solution for the problem of finding a point-to-point trajectory with maximum load carrying capacities for flexible manipulators is proposed. For rigid manipulators, the major limiting factor in determining the Dynamic Load Carrying Capacity (DLCC) is the joint actuator capacity. The flexibility exhibited by light weight robots or by robots o...
متن کاملRandomized Primal-Dual analysis of RANKING for Online BiPartite Matching
We give a simple proof that the RANKING algorithm of Karp, Vazirani and Vazirani [KVV90] is 1-1/e competitive for the online bipartite matching problem. The proof is via a randomized primal-dual argument. Primal-dual algorithms have been successfully used for many online algorithm problems, but the dual constraints are always satisfied deterministically. This is the first instance of a non-triv...
